Newick Lawn Tennis Club
Chairman's message August 2024
Dear Members

The weather has been glorious for tennis so I'm hoping you've been able to get out there and enjoy playing.

Our youngsters are making good use of the courts during their holidays and it was great that several joined us on club night last week. The Horam League was completed on 5th August with 12 matches being played on Mondays throughout April, May, June and July. We played in Division 1 and came 5th ahead of Cross in Hand 2 and Crowborough 2 - a fantastic result!! Well done everyone.
Just to update you about a few things

The clubhouse toilets have been upgraded and are looking really smart. Grateful thanks to the working group of Malcolm, Liz and Rachel

We are up and running on social media thanks to Hilary and Francoise. They have promoted the club on FB and Newick Talk as well as putting together a promotional leaflet that has gone to all Newick residents together with those in the surrounding villages of Chailey, Isfield and Fletching. We are hopeful that new members will come and join our lovely club

The Club is hosting an end of Summer Tournament and BBQ on Sunday 1st September starting at 12 noon with coffee and cake, followed by a tennis tournament and then the BBQ. Spectators are welcome too. Adults £10, Juniors £5. The Club will provide the meats, and vegetarian options, garlic bread etc but please bring your own favourite tipple and either a salad or a dessert. Sue has kindly offered to coordinate this so we have our usual delicious mix of different things so please contact her via email (sueaaustin@gmail.com) to confirm what you'll be bringing

All 3 courts are in need of an upgrade this year, so this has been scheduled for the last week of August. The work has to be done while the weather is warm and cannot be done during the winter months. This is very much weather and contractor dependent so nothing is set in stone and it may be the first week of September -we will keep you posted!! This will involve closing the courts for one week and they will undergo a deep clean, remedial repair work and then a repaint of the two tone green and white lining

Walking Tennis: this is a new initiative we have been trialling on a Wednesday morning and it's proving to be popular. An orange ball is used to play and it can bounce a max of twice within the court. The same scoring is used as for tennis but you can only walk to hit the ball. If you know someone who might be interested in playing please invite them along to the session on Wednesdays at 10am. Each session lasts for about an hour and is followed by tea, coffee and cake! Further details are available on our Walking Tennis website page

Francoise and a group of ladies have been looking at the possibility of having ‘T’ shirts with the Club Logo and have secured a selection. Further details will be available on the website shortly including how to order them through Dan Barber at the IDC (Incredible Design Co) based at the old KIng’s Head at Chailey Crossroads. Sizings are S M L but they are a little snug so it's recommended you go up a size!

Hopefully see some of you at the BBQ, remember to let Sue know if you're coming.
Best wishes
Jenny
